Jjajangmyeon has always been one of my favorite comfort foods, but making traditional black bean sauce from scratch takes a lot more time than I usually have. One day I realized that Buldak Jjajang ramen already has that rich, savory black bean flavor, so I paired it with a frozen seafood mix from H-Mart to turn instant ramen into something that feels much more like a complete meal. It’s quick, affordable, and honestly tastes way fancier than the effort it takes.
| Ingredient | Store | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Buldak Jjajang Ramen (2 packs) | H-Mart | ~$4.50 |
| Frozen seafood mix (12 oz bag) | H-Mart | ~$5.99 |
| Neutral cooking oil | Pantry | Minimal |
| Water | Pantry | Free |
Note: I only used about half of the seafood mix, so the rest went back into the freezer for another meal.
Heat about 1 tablespoon of neutral oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Add roughly half the bag of frozen seafood mix directly to the pan—no need to thaw it first.
Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the seafood is fully cooked and most of the excess liquid has evaporated.
Remove from the pan and set aside.
Bring a medium pot of water to a boil.
Add both packs of ramen noodles and cook according to the package directions, about 5 minutes.
Before draining, reserve about ¼ cup of the noodle cooking water.
Return the drained noodles to the pot over low heat.
Add both jjajang seasoning packets along with a splash of the reserved noodle water.
Stir until the noodles are evenly coated in a thick, glossy black bean sauce.
Add the cooked seafood back to the noodles.
Toss everything together until the seafood is coated with the sauce and heated through.
Serve immediately while hot.
Buldak Jjajang ramen: ~$2.25
Frozen seafood mix (½ bag): ~$3.00
Cooking oil: Minimal
Total per serving: ~$5.25
This is one of my favorite ways to upgrade instant ramen into something that feels like a restaurant meal without spending restaurant money. The seafood makes the dish heartier and adds a little natural sweetness that pairs perfectly with the rich, savory jjajang sauce. It comes together in about 20 minutes, only uses two main ingredients, and is perfect for those nights when I want something comforting and filling but don't feel like cooking an elaborate dinner. It's become one of my go-to dorm meals whenever I'm craving Korean comfort food on a budget.
